The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; Tom Sawyer Abroad; and Tom Sawyer, Detective (The Works of Mark Twain, Volume 4)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 70.99 $This is a small sampling of Mark Twain's life-long fulminations against the editors, printers, and proofreaders who, subtly or grossly, altered his work and shrouded his intentions as they transmitted his writing from manuscript to type. Through unauthorized changes and inadvertent errors, Mark Twain's first publishers brought out texts full of thousands of errors in form and content. Later publishers then based their reprints on these corrupt editions and added errors of their own. It is the aim of the Iowa-California edition to strip away this accretion of error and present texts faithful to the author's intention. By comparing all the life-time version of Mark Twain's works, the editors are able to isolate the author's revisions from the printers and publishers' changes. The record of this comparison supplies not only the evidence for editorial decisions, but also the history of the author's efforts to shape his work. In addition, these volumes include previously uncollected work, work that has long been out of print, and such unpublished writing as related drafts, working notes, and marginalia. The texts are established at the Center for Textual Studies at the University of Iowa or at the Mark Twain Papers in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. The costs for editorial work have been met by generous support from the Editing Program of the National Endowment for the Humanities, an independent federal agency, and other institutional and private donors. The edition is published by the University of California Press with financial assistance from the Graduate College at the University of Iowa. All volumes are submitted to the Center for Editions of american Authors, or to its successor, the Committee for Scholarly Editions, for examination and approval

The Innocents Abroad Format: Paperback
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.86 $Hailed by the New York Herald as “an oasis in the desert of works on foreign travel,” The Innocents Abroad was a great success when first published, and it remained the bestselling of all Twain’s works throughout his lifetime. It shows the author at the height of his literary power as he records razor-sharp, often hilarious, observations of the people he meets and places he visits during a trip to Europe and the Holy Land in 1867.Originally a series of travel letters written for a San Francisco newspaper, the book presents a refreshingly honest and vivid view of such places as Tangier, Marseilles, Gibraltar, Rome, Constantinople, and Damascus. Twain’s humor takes a particularly satirical turn toward tourists who rely on travel guidebooks rather than personal impressions to define their travel experiences. The book alternates light-hearted chapters with serious passages involving history, statistics, and descriptions of religious relics, artwork, and architecture. From amusements and tribulations at sea, viewing the “outrageous” cancan in Paris, and witnessing the notable sights of Venice, to observing the grandeur of St. Peter’s, ascending Vesuvius, and contemplating the remains of Solomon’s Temple, this classic will delight a wide audience, including longtime fans of the American humorist and anyone who enjoys an entertaining and enlightening travel book. This edition also includes all the illustrations from the original publication.

A Fiction of Authenticity: Contemporary Africa Abroad
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 75.69 $A Fiction of Authenticity presents seminal moments for challenging prevailing notions about interculturalism and postcolonial subjects. This full-color catalogue features specially commissioned work by 11 contemporary artists of African descent--each of whom lives and works in either the United States or Europe and examines the invented idea of an “authentic” Africa. Each of these artists has positioned themselves outside the frame of Africa, but each remains connected, and by doing so has created a shift in the way the world considers postmodern and postcolonial art production. The participating artists are Siemon Allen, Fatma Charfi, Godfried Donkor, Mary Evans, Meschac Gaba, Kendell Geers, Moshekwa Langa, Ingrid Mwangi, Odili Donald Odita, Owusu-Ankomah and Zineb Sedira. Also included are seven new essays by some of the most exciting and critical voices working internationally today. A Fiction of Authenticity considers the diasporic positioning of these artists, as well as paradigms of discourse concerned with aesthetics, nationhood, citizenship, community, locality and sense of place.

Assessing Study Abroad
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.94 $This book is intended to guide advisors, administrators, and faculty members engaged with study abroad who are concerned with answering the question: what does study abroad achieve? It will also inform the work of study abroad organizations as well as institutions receiving study abroad students. Offering a broad-based approach to assessment, the book will appeal to those starting out. However, an array of case studies, illustrating the often untidy process of implementation, will equally appeal to those further along by offering creative – and often simple – approaches to common problems. Following an account of how, and why, assessment in the field has evolved, the first part of the book sets the stage for the reader to consider the role of mission and context in determining purpose, goals and outcomes; to identify and consult with stakeholders; determine what data and expertise may already be available on campus; match methods and tools to questions; and create realistic plans to communicate findings, and to act upon them. The second part of the book offers an overview of appropriate tools and strategies for assessing study abroad, emphasizing the importance of carefully formulating and prioritizing assessment questions and understanding the advantages and drawbacks of different instruments. It describes an array of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods, illustrating their application with examples of practice, and concludes by outlining the process of putting a plan into action. The book concludes with ten case studies that illustrate various approaches to planning, experimentation, and implementation, some revealing false starts and lessons learned, and all conveying the message that assessment is an iterative, on-going process that needs constant refinement. The cases represent a wide variety of institutional and organizational types and demonstrate how each selected methods suited to their capacities and cultures.

The Johnson Years v. 3; LBJ at Home and Abroad
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 75.75 $Over the past decade, Lyndon Johnson has become the focus of an increasing number of revisionist studies. As a group, these works have been every bit as contentious and contradictory as LBJ himself and, ultimately, have provided only limited consensus on his presidency and his political career.Adding fire to the debate, seven leading Johnson scholars here provide a revealing new look at LBJ's role in domestic and foreign policy. They examine his obsession with the Vietnam War; his commitment to the Great Society and civil rights; his failure to deal with radical civil-rights leaders and the crisis in the ghettos; his limited knowledge of Europe and his dealings with NATO; his Middle East policy; his views on Strategic Arms Limitations; his contribution to the decline of the Democratic party in the sixties; and his reactive rather than proactive response to women's issues. This is the third volume in editor Robert Divine's highly regarded series on the LBJ presidency. Originally intended to feature the rich materials available to scholars in the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library in Austin, the trilogy's accomplishments now extend well beyond that original intent. It both deepens our understanding of the major issues of the sixties and points the way to significant topics and resources for future debate.

The Landscapes of Louis Remy Mignot: A Southern Painter Abroad
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.00 $Landscape painter Louis Remy Mignot (1831-1870) was acclaimed during his lifetime as "one of the finest artists of our country." As a Catholic in a Protestant nation, a southerner in the North, and an American abroad, Mignot continually redefined himself in his paintings. His work displays a versatility and delicacy unsurpassed by his contemporaries.Fully illustrated, this first complete appraisal of Mignot's art reestablishes the prominence of a painter who all but disappeared from the annals of art after his death in 1870. Beginning with only fifteen known paintings, the authors retraced Mignot's life and have identified as his more than one hundred paintings and sketches in private collections and museums. The Landscapes of Louis Remy Mignot showcases for the first time the full spectrum of Mignot's diverse body of work. Encompassing snow scenes in Holland, New England farmscapes, views of the English countryside, and pre-Impressionist images of Paris, his chromatically nuanced portrayals of open, empty spaces, ruined buildings, and twilit skies reflect a melancholic sensibility that aligns him with intellectual romanticism.

Civic Literacy: How Informed Citizens Make Democracy Work (Civil Society: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 181.58 $Scholars, pundits, and politicians, both in the US and abroad, have warned of a decline in citizen involvement in public life. Many (following the lead of Robert Putnam's Bowling Alone) have focused on the "social capital" allegedly created by the participation of citizens in a wide range of voluntary associations. But Henry Milner, a noted scholar of comparative politics, argues that a society's level of civic literacy -- the knowledge and capacity of citizens to make sense of their political world -- offers a better basis for understanding the civil societies of disparate cultures, and comparing the effectiveness of their democratic institutions. In a clear, accessible style, Milner marshals a wealth of data from the US, Canada, western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand to show how civic literacy underpins effective democracies. Masterfully weaving together philosophical debates over citizenship and community with the empirical findings of social scientists and his own first-hand experience of a variety of cultures, Milner shows that a population's degree of civic literacy is the single best predictor of its level of political participation. Drawing on the experience of the high civic literacy societies of Northern Europe, he sets out a series of policies -- policies linked to the role of the media, to adult and civic education, and to the informativeness of partisan political debate -- that lay the groundwork for the exercise of the responsibilities of citizenship in the 21st century.
